Sarah's Road to Recovery

Sarah has been a regular face at the DRC having previously come along to our Job Club. She recently decided to take part in our Road to Recovery course ran by DRC employment officer Donna Dennis. Road to Recovery is a 9 week course that focuses on removing barriers to employment. Week by week the course covers a wide range of subjects with session topics that include 'Anxiety and Mental Health', 'Positive Thinking', and 'Building Confidence and Motivation'.

It was Sarah’s struggles with confidence that had made her want to attend the Road to Recovery course. Several challenges in her life were acting as barriers to her development both personally and professionally. Living with epilepsy and having frequent seizures had added to these challenges. Sarah had hoped that through Road to Recovery she would learn to manage her anxieties and build lost confidence.

Over its 9 weeks duration Sarah excelled on the course, with Donna and fellow course attendees noticing her transformation. She slowly progressed from shy and reserved to talkative and open. She informed her fellow attendees that she had started a maths course at her local adult education centre. Initially Sarah seemed quite anxious of how she would perform in assessments, believing that she may fail them. But using the valuable skills that Road to Recovery teaches Sarah started taking a more positive outlook which paid off. Sarah has passed each exam she has taken with high marks and credits the support of the DRC for helping her to achieve this.

Many of us who have been out of education for a long time are familiar with the struggle of readjusting back into a learning environment. This readjustment process is often made harder when you balance your studies with a disability or long-term health condition, which is why Sarah's achievements are worthy of such merit. Sarah now feels she has the confidence and drive to pass the remaining exams and all of us at the DRC are right behind her. She’s still in touch with the DRC, now having joined our Money Matters course, and we look forward to continuing to support Sarah on her journey.
